Brushing Your Teeth with Baking Soda: Is it Safe or Not?

We know baking soda or sodium bi-carbonate is used by people as a popular alternative for brushing their teeth. We also know that this soda is used by top companies as one of key ingredients in their toothpastes. It’s also true that baking soda is very effective against plaque formation and ensures whiter and brighter teeth.

Baking soda not only leads to teeth whitening but also prevents dental decay and cavity formation. It’s also affective against bad breath, gum diseases and painful mouth ulcers. However, baking soda also carries some risk you should know to avoid them and then benefit from it a lot.

Baking soda is good only when people use it with care, including –

  • Brush with care when you use baking soda with focus on applying in evenly across teeth so that no particular area gets more or less,
  • You must mix baking soda with some other substances like glycerine or strawberry to fight off plaque and minimize its grittiness and abrasive nature,
  • You can mix baking soda with lemon juice or vinegar and then rinse the mouth to benefit from excellent bleaching properties,
  • You can use baking soda and peppermint extract to remove the bitter after taste that it can cause when you brush with it.

Here are some of reasons that show how baking soda can be bad for your dental health –

1. Baking soda is gritty

Even if baking soda has a number of oral health benefits, you can’t ignore that fact that it’s gritty and can leave an uncomfortable taste in the mouth. To use it for brushing, it important to mix it with the toothpaste or combine with peppermint or glycerine to dilute its gritty taste. Similarly, baking soda neve comes with the best of packaging which makes it somewhat messy. It is never neat, and you will never be sure about its quality or effectiveness. So, use it with care else there will be harm to the teeth.

2. Baking soda is not enough to prevent cavities

You’re mistake if you believe that the use of baking soda alone will keep you away from the risk of cavities. Even dental experts feel the same that baking soda is not adequate in itself when it comes to preventing or fighting the plaque. It does not have compositions to kill bacteria and you know cavities can’t be prevented unless bacteria are killed. More so, the lack of fluoride is also a major reason why baking soda is not of much help in preventing cavities. So, don’t pin too much hope on it for your cavities.

3. Baking soda can damage enamel

A lot of people use baking soda to brush their teeth. They find no harm with that as they are not aware about the risks linked to it. There is no harm if baking soda is used in right proportion but when the quantity used in not right, it can harm the enamel. And when enamel is damaged, it can lead to tooth decay.

4. Baking soda can damage the gums

We know how people not using baking soda in right proportion are at risk of getting their enamel damaged. The excess of it is also not good for the gums. Since soda has abrasive properties, it can harm the gums over time. It’s therefore important to use baking soda with caution for your oral care and being specific with the proportion is even more important. You can rely on baking soda for teeth cleaning but make sure you get the right proportion to stay away from the harm’s way.

5. Baking soda is not good for dental glue

Baking soda is not good if you are wearing braces. Its repeated use might soften the adhesive used to keep in place braces or other retainers. This can also leave dark spots which is never good from aesthetic point of view. If you are wearing braces, be cautious with the use of soda else the risk will be big for your oral health.
