Breast lift surgery is a common plastic surgery procedure. It should always be administered by a board-certified plastic surgeon, and it is an ideal procedure for those who want to reposition the breast or nipples, and it does not increase the size of the breasts. The purpose of a breast lift is to enhance the position of droopy breasts and low nipples.

As we age, the shape of our breasts will naturally begin to sag. In addition, pregnancy and breastfeeding can also cause the breasts to sag. Many individuals choose to get a breast lift for these reasons, which results in a natural and flattering appearance.

Here are some questions that may help you decide if a breast lift is right for you:

Do my nipples sit below the crease of the breast?

Am I happy with the natural shape of my breasts without a bra?

Do my nipples point downward?

If these questions have helped you realize that a breast lift may be suitable for you, it is best to consult with an experienced plastic surgeon who has performed breast lift surgeries.

What is the Difference Between a Breast Lift, a Breast Reduction, and Breast Implants?

A mastopexy is also known as a breast lift. The purpose of this procedure is to remove the excess skin and reposition the shape of the nipple. A breast lift will not yield the same results as breast implants because no volume is added to the breasts. A plastic surgeon simply lifts the breast tissue during a mastopexy.

Many individuals who have a breast reduction also have a breast lift. A breast lift will lift the skin, and a breast reduction will remove breast tissue. It is primarily the same technique with the same incisions. However, a breast reduction also removes volume.

Types of Breast Lifts

There are four common types of breast lift procedures, which are known as:

  • Periareolar Mastopexy

With this type of breast lift, a single incision is administered around the areola. This is also referred to as a donut lift and is suitable for those with mild sagging. In addition, this type of breast lift can also be ideal for those who want to decrease the size of their areola.

  • Vertical Mastopexy

In addition to the incision that is made at the areola, another incision is made vertically beneath the breast. This breast lift is common and leaves modest scars that are easily hidden beneath the breasts. With a vertical lift, it often gives breasts a lollipop shape.

  • Crescent Mastopexy

This is referred to as a crescent lift and is used on those with very minimal sagging. In addition, this type of breast lift is also most commonly administered on those who are also getting breast implants.

  • Inverted-T Mastopexy

A vertical incision, a periareolar incision, and an incision around the inframammary fold are made that form an inverted-T beneath the breast. This is ideal for those who have excessive sagging because a plastic surgeon is able to easily remove a significant amount of skin.

The Procedure

A breast lift will typically take one to two hours and is administered as an outpatient procedure. Patients will have intravenous sedation as well as local or general anesthesia. When the procedure is finished, breasts will be wrapped, and it is suggested that patients wear a surgical bra.

Recovery From a Breast Lift

When your breast lift procedure is complete, you should avoid strenuous physical activity and exercise for two to three weeks. Normal activities can resume as soon as pain and discomfort subside. The sutures that are used to close the incisions are durable and can withstand great amounts of pressure.

Immediately following the procedure, it is normal for the breasts to feel numb and swollen. These symptoms will naturally resolve with time, and the final results following the procedure should surface within six months. As a result, your breast will be a pleasing and natural shape. Over the months following the procedure, it is normal to go through several bra sizes.

Are There Any Risks to Having the Procedure?

As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks that are involved with a breast lift. For a period of six to 12 months, the scars from the incisions may be raised, firm, or red. However, as the scars begin to heal, they will become softer, flatter, and the color will be more similar to your natural skin tone.

Although it is uncommon for breast lift procedures, the infection can form following any surgery. If an infection does occur after a breast lift, drainage or antibiotics may be required. To minimize the risk of infection, breast lift patients are typically provided with an antibiotic following the procedure.

When the nipples are being repositioned, it could cause sensory nerves to be damaged, which could result in temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the nipples. For this reason, it is imperative to have an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon perform the procedure.
